The Pakistan Cricket Board is set to revert to its old selection committee system after the experiment of having no chief selector failed miserably during the T20 World Cup and before it. Pakistan was ousted in the group stage of the T20 World Cup, losing to minnows USA and arch-rival India. “The board is likely to return to the old system of having a chief selector with two or three selectors and the captain and head coach not sitting in selection meetings with the selectors,” a source told PTI.
This year's T20 World Cup has delivered more than its fair share of surprises. The early exits of Pakistan and New Zealand, commendable performances from USA and Scotland, and low-scoring games on bowler friendly surfaces have made it a tournament to remember, despite matches being played at odd hours of the day.
The Pakistan cricket over the new few months is expected to go through 'major surgery', as said by Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi. Successive poor shows in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the 2024 T20 World Cup, has put a big question mark on the Babar Azam-led Pakistan. This time around the reaction to the exit is stronger because Pakistan started the tournament with an unexpected loss against debutants USA. Then they loss against India. The two losses proved to be Pakistan's nemesis as they were knocked out despite winning their last two encounters.
Pakistan's group stage exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup has created a meltdown among several former cricketers and experts. But none have been as telling as the revelation from Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten about a lack of unity within the current Pakistan unit. Led by Babar Azam - who regained captaincy from Shaheen Afridi prior to the T20 World Cup - Pakistan crashed out after losses to USA and India. With rumours of groupism within the team, and following Gary Kirsten's leaked outburst, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has made a witty comment about the situation.
Pakistan international batter Shan Masood, playing for Yorkshire in Vitality T20 Blast, was at the center of the strange incident that saw him remain not-out despite getting run-out on a no-ball. It all happened when Masood was batting on 58, facing Lancashire's Jack Blatherwick in the 15th over. Masood hit the stumps while trying to hit the ball on the backfoot and wandered outside the crease thinking he was out. The Lancashire players also dislodged the bails at the other end of the pitch, inflicting a run-out.
Sania Mirza and Mohammed Shami are two of the most successful sportspersons that the country has seen over the last few decades. Sania is the greatest women's tennis player from India while Shami is a champion pace bowler, with his solid show at the ODI World Cup 2023 catapulting the Indian cricket team into the final. Recently, a rumour started floating that Sania Mirza and Mohammed Shami were going to get married.
Former Pakistan cricket team captain Mohammad Hafeez caused quite a stir in the cricketing world when he called star India batter Virat Kohli 'selfish' following his century against South Africa in Cricket World Cup 2023. Virat slammed his 49th international ton off 121 balls during the group stage match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. However, Hafeez said that Virat focused more on personal milestones and did not play for the team. During a recent episode of the Club Prairie Fire podcast with Australia legend Adam Gilchrist and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan, Hafeez was asked about his comments and the former Pakistan all-rounder doubled down on his views regarding Virat Kohli.
