ATHENS: Before North America, World Cup magic made a stopover in Greece. Players battled and bonded not at the mega-stadiums of Mexico, Canada and the United States, but on practice fields squeezed into urban neighborhoods of Athens. There were no luxury suites or grand arenas — just a local soccer competition where migrants and Greek players kicked the ball on city fields before crowds pressed to chain‑link fences, as music spilled into the streets. And while Albania, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria and Sudan didn’t qualify for the World Cup, amateur players with ties to those countries brought their best game in Athens. Many migrant players have been bracing for the implementation of Europe’s stricter migration and asylum rules in June. But the tournament for migrant and refugee communities was a joyful distraction, a celebration of football and identity. At one venue near Plato’s Academy, where ancient Athenians once debated the meaning of citizenship, the Acropolis rose in the distance beyond the field.
LONDON: Tyson Fury has said he plans to return to the ring in Dublin on August 1 — one week after fellow former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua makes his comeback. The pair are heading for a long-awaited ‘Battle of Britain’, probably in November, although it appears that both boxers will first have a warm-up fight. Joshua will face unheralded Albanian Kristian Prenga in Riyadh on July 25 in his first bout since being involved in a car crash in Nigeria in December which killed two of his close friends. Fury posted a video in an Instagram story showing him back in training in Thailand alongside the caption: “Let’s go August 1, Dublin, Ireland.” Fury could take a place on a card being put together by veteran promoter Frank Warren in the Republic of Ireland capital on that date. No opponent has yet been named, although Warren has ruled out Fury fighting Andy Ruiz Jr, who dethroned Joshua as world champion in 2019 before losing the rematch later that year. Fury marked his return from a 16-month retirement with a dominant points win over Russia’s Arslanbek Makhmudov in April, after which he immediately called out Joshua, who was present at ringside. Rather than face-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a verbal exchange followed in which Joshua taunted Fury by declaring: “I’m the landlord, remember that.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said he and his staff would have their work cut out getting their squad ready for the World Cup at their training camp in Turkiye with most of the players having been out of action for the last seven weeks. The domestic Arabian Gulf Pro League season was suspended after the United States and Israel launched air strikes on Iran in late February and will not resume until after the World Cup. Of the 30-man squad Ghalenoei named on Saturday, 22 play for Iranian clubs and have been restricted to a Tehran national team training camp since friendlies against Costa Rica and Nigeria in Antalya in late March. “Naturally, I am not fully satisfied with the players’ level of readiness,” Ghalenoei told the Iranian FA (FFIR) magazine before the departure for Turkiye on Monday. “But with a training camp that is approximately two and a half to three weeks long, we can make up about 20 to 25 percent of this shortfall. “We need to raise our domestic-based players to the level required by the modern game,” he added.
