The year 2024 ended on a strange note for the Indian cricket team, with a string of poor results hurting World Test Championship final qualification chances. First the home whitewash against New Zealand and then the twin defeats in Adelaide and Melbourne leaving the team's fate hanging in balance. Not all is well in the Indian team's dressing room at the moment. With Australia leading 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with just one Test in Sydney to go, there's an understandable discontent in the Indian team. Pressure has been increasing on India head coach Gautam Gambhir, under whom, the team produced some astonishing results against Sri Lanka (in ODIs), and New Zealand (in Tests at home) and is now on the brink of losing the Test assignment in Australia and with it, a chance to qualify for the World Test Championship final.

England, New Zealand and Australia also registered some important wins throughout the year. All this while, some of the world's best cricketers enthralled the crowds, became thorn in the eyes of their rivals and broke several records on the way to victory.
Cricket lovers rejoiced when legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan asked a question on the Gentlemen's Game during the latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati. Putting forward a question for INR 6.40 lakh, Amitabh asked the contestant a tricky question on Test cricket. Over the last few years, the longest format of the game has undergone a big reform, with huge totals being put on the board while most matches are ending in results. Mr. Bachchan asked a question from the year 2022 when a certain team scored over 500 runs on Day 1 of a Test match, becoming the first to do so.
Canadian doubles star Gabriela Dabrowski made history in November when she became the first Canadian to win the WTA Finals alongside her partner, New Zealand's Erin Routliffe.
In a massive honour, Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was named as the captain of the 'Test XI of 2024' made by cricket.com.au, which also includes one more Indian star. Bumrah, who has led India in two Test matches, secured his first victory as Test captain during the Perth Test, the first of the five Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches. In the match, the pacer led the team from the front with an eight-wicket haul and an all-round Team India crushed Australia by 295 runs to secure a famous win just after a series whitewash loss to New Zealand at home by 0-3, their first Test series loss in 12 years.
