England struggled after lunch on day two as a century stand between Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell shifted the momentum in New Zealand’s favour at Lord’s.
England veteran fast bowler Stuart Broad said he had a "good feeling" about the fourth day of the first test between his side and New Zealand at Lord's, with England requiring 61 runs to claim victory on Sunday.
Chennai Super Kings batter Devon Conway has attributed his side's performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years to "keeping your chin up" attitude, which he felt doesn't allow emotions to get the better of players even after big losses. The New Zealander added that despite the fact that the four-time IPL champions couldn't hit their stride in this year's edition of the tournament, there was no despondency in the dressing room, as everyone kept a smile on their face, not allowing defeats to affect them much.
The ongoing first Test between England and New Zealand has had its ebbs and flows and on stumps on Day 3. It was the hosts who have the upper hand as they are just 61 runs away from registering victory at the Lord's Cricket Ground to go 1-0 up in the three-match series. Joe Root (77*) and Ben Foakes (9*) are currently unbeaten for England. However, it was skipper Ben Stokes who led England's fight back after the side were left reeling at 69/4 in the 17th over, chasing 277.
Joe Root hit an unbeaten 77 to steer England to within 61 runs of victory in the first Test while New Zealand require five wickets as the contest remained intriguingly poised at the end of a tense third day at Lords. England were 216-5 at close, chasing a target of 277 after dismissing New Zealand for 285 before lunch on Saturday. Root, no longer incumbered by the captaincy, was at his imperious best as he took away the early advantage from the tourists, who had England teetering at 69-4 before tea when seamer Kyle Jamieson made early breakthroughs. Root and his successor Ben Stokes put together a 90-run partnership to turn the tide with the new skipper scoring 54 before being caught behind – the only wicket to fall after tea.
If victory can be secured on Sunday it would cap what has been a fantastic Test match for so many reasons. There can be no one who's come to watch this game over the last three days who would leave disappointed with what they have seen.
Nasser Hussain believes England have a slight advantage over New Zealand heading into day four of the first Test as the Kiwis face the prospect of opening the day's play with an old ball.
England's victory hopes remain very much alive in the first LV= Insurance Test after Joe Root and Ben Stokes revived their side on day three of an absorbing Lord's clash against New Zealand.
