RABAT, May 23 : King Mohammed VI of Morocco has pardoned the Senegal supporters convicted of hooliganism during the Africa Cup of Nations soccer final, which his country hosted earlier this year, the royal palace said on Saturday.
PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, who is facing trial for alleged rape, will bid to have the case dismissed in court on Friday, AFP learned from a source close to the case. A hearing before the Versailles appeals court, west of Paris, will examine the case of the 27-year-old Morocco international who is to stand trial charged with raping a woman. If his appeal is rejected and the charges are not reduced to a more minor offense, the footballer will be tried on a date to be arranged. In February 2023, a woman then aged 24 told police in the Val-de-Marne area southeast of Paris that Hakimi had raped her. Hakimi was formally charged, placed under judicial supervision, and in February the decision was taken to send the case to trial. Hakimi, who played a pivotal role in Morocco becoming the first African and Arab side to reach the World Cup semifinals when they made the last four in 2022, denies any wrongdoing. Contacted by AFP, the player’s lawyer, Fanny Colin, declined to comment. During the referral hearing, Colin had argued that “the accusation rests solely on the word of a woman who obstructed all investigations, refused all medical examinations and DNA tests (and) refused to give the name of key witnesses.” The plaintiff said she met Hakimi in January 2023 through Instagram and went to his home in a taxi ordered by the player, a police source said at the time. She claimed that the player kissed her, touched her without her consent and then raped her. She said she managed to push him away and text a friend, who came to pick her up. Hakimi joined PSG in 2021 from Inter Milan after stints at Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. He is expected to be in the PSG team when the defending champions play Arsenal
DAKAR: Senegal’s Sadio Mane is a key selection in the 28-man World Cup squad named by coach Pape Thiaw on Thursday as the influential forward looks to make up for lost time having missed the finals four years ago in Qatar through injury. Thiaw will have to trim his squad by two players ahead of the final deadline toward the end of this month. Mane remains a leading player for a star-studded Senegal lineup that looks to be the most potent of the 10 African qualifiers for the finals in the US, Mexico and Canada, with a blend of experience and youthful athleticism in the squad. The 34-year-old Al-Nassr player is likely to lead the line but also selected are Bayern Munich forward Nicolas Jackson plus Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr. Bayern’s 18-year-old midfielder Bara Ndiaye has also been called up but there is no place for Malang Sarr, who has excelled this season with Lens. Idrissa Gueye, also of Everton, has been included despite missing the tail-end of the season through injury, with Sunderland’s Habib Diarra and Tottenham Hotspur’s Pape Matar Sarr also midfield options. Experienced center-back Kalidou Koulibaly has been picked along with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Senegal were the best team at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and edged the hosts 1-0 in a contentious final that was later awarded to the North Africans, a matter that is before the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Senegal have been drawn in Group I at the World Cup and open their campaign against France on June 16 in New Jersey in a repeat of their famous 2002 World Cup meeting in which the African side came out on top against the then-holders. GLASGOW: Scotland’s 43-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon is going to the World Cup alongside teammates who were not born when he made his national-team debut in 2004. Scotland coach Steve Clarke announced a 26-man squad Tuesday for the country’s first World Cup in 28 years, with Gordon among three goalkeepers who combined to play in just four league games for their clubs all season. Gordon would be the second-oldest player in the World Cup’s 96-year history if he gets on the field in North America. Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary was 45 when he played at the 2018 World Cup. Gordon played three times in January for Heart of Midlothian, the long-time Scottish Premiership leader that were edged for the title Saturday by Celtic, but has been dealing with shoulder injuries.
