India’s women upset two of archery’s leading powers in recurve and China’s Li Mengqi delivered a breakthrough performance on home soil as Stage 2 of the 2026 Archery World Cup wrapped up in Shanghai on Sunday. Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Kumkum Mohod defeated China’s Zhu Jingyi, Huang Yuwei and Yu Qi 28-26 in a shoot-off after the final finished level at 4-4 following four sets, denying China back-to-back women’s recurve team titles after their Stage 1 victory in Puebla. The fourth-seeded Indian trio had earlier beaten 10-time Olympic champions South Korea 5-1 in the semifinals, with the Koreans going on to take bronze. China’s Li Mengqi capped a breakout performance on home soil by winning the men’s individual recurve title in just his second World Cup appearance. Li, who debuted on the circuit in Medellin in 2023, beat Matias Grande of Mexico, top seed Tang Chih-Chun of Taiwan and Olympic champion Kim Je Deok of South Korea on his way to the final, where he defeated Turkiye’s Mete Gazoz. He later partnered Huang Yuwei to win mixed team recurve gold for China, beating South Korea’s Oh Ye-jin and Kim Woo-jin in the final.
TEHRAN: The president of the Iranian Football Federation said late Saturday that if Iran dropped out of the World Cup, it would deprive the country of a “major diplomatic asset.” Mehdi Taj was speaking after the federation (FFIRI) said on Saturday that Iran would take part in the men’s football showpiece this summer despite the Middle East War, but demanded that joint hosts the United States, Mexico and Canada agree to its conditions. “If we do not participate in the World Cup, we will lose a major diplomatic asset,” Taj said in an interview broadcast late Saturday on state television. Iran’s participation in the tournament has been surrounded by uncertainty since the outbreak of war in February, following strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic. But on Saturday, the FFIRI said on its official website: “We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account. “We will participate in the World Cup tournament, but without any retreat from our beliefs, culture, and convictions.” Taj has set 10 conditions for attending the global spectacle, seeking assurances over the country’s treatment. The conditions include visas being granted and respect for the national team staff, the team’s flag and its national anthem during the tournament, as well as demands for elevated security at airports, hotels and routes to the stadiums where they will play. World football’s governing body FIFA has insisted for weeks that Iran will take part. Iran, who are due to be based in Tucson, Arizona, during the World Cup, face New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt in Group G. The Iranians open their World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15.

TEHRAN: Iran’s football federation said on Saturday that the men’s national team will take part in the 2026 World Cup this summer, but demanded that joint hosts the United States, Mexico and Canada agree to its conditions amid the Middle East war.The call comes after Canada refused entry to the federation’s chief last month before the FIFA Congress because of his links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the ideological arm of Iran’s military, which it designated as a terror group in 2024.Iran’s presence at the tournament, which will take place between June 11 and July 19, has been shrouded in uncertainty since the eruption of war in the Middle East in February following strikes by the United States and Israel.“We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account,” the Iranian federation said on its official website.“We will participate in the World Cup tournament, but without any retreat from our beliefs, culture, and convictions.”The Iranian football federation (FFIRI) president Mehdi Taj told state TV on Friday that Tehran has 10 conditions for attending the global spectacle, seeking assurances over the country’s treatment. The conditions include visas being granted and respect for the national team staff, the team’s flag and its national anthem during the tournament, as well as demands for high security at airports, hotels and routes to the stadiums where they will play.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has insisted that Iran’s footballers would be welcome at the tournament. But he warned that the US may yet bar entry to members of the Iranian delegation with ties to the IRGC, which it also designates as a terrorist organization.“All players and technical
