Hockey 5s, a shorter and faster version of the traditional field hockey. The two-day event, an FIH's effort to promote the game among masses in a shorter version similar to T20 in cricket, Rugby7s and 3x3 basketball, will look to create a new genre for the game and increase its appeal among the fans. The Indian men's team will play their opening match against hosts Switzerland followed by game against Pakistan on the same day. The Indians will then face Malaysia and Poland respectively on Sunday. Indian team's skipper for the event, Gurinder Singh, said they can't wait to take the field on Saturday. "It's a great atmosphere out here. We also had good training sessions and we are fully prepared for the tournament. "We will be up against some quality teams and since the format is new, it will be a challenging task for us. It is fast-paced and we will need to adapt to the situations as quickly as possible," he said.
Thomas Cup victory is one for the ages. Singles badminton in India has made itself a force to be reckoned with in the 21st century, but a top rung team event was never really seen as one that could be won outright. The experts don't shy away from admitting it, which is why the 2022 Thomas Cup win has been put on a pedestal. India are the men's world champions in a sense. The win over 14-time champions Indonesia set that statement in stone. But what really changed to inspire the team to do what very few anticipated -- defeating Malaysia in the quarterfinals, Denmark in the semis and Indonesia in the final? While the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have been talked about as the story of the tournament, the foundation of that fiery attitude was laid by senior pros Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy, who led from the front: Srikanth won all his six matches, Prannoy all his five. Prannoy spoke to TimesofIndia.com about that experience in a special interview. Why Prannoy's feat (5 wins in 5 games) has a bit more steel to it is because of the fact that he brought India back from the brink of defeat twice -- once in the quarters and then in the semis. On both occasions, India won 3-2 to book a place in their maiden Thomas Cup final.
Lausanne 2022, scheduled to be held from June 4 to 5. While the men's team is set to play against Malaysia, Pakistan, Poland and Switzerland, the women's side will face South Africa, Uruguay, Poland and Switzerland in the round-robin stage. The top two teams will square off in the final on June 5. The Rajani Etimarpu-led Indian women's team will take on Uruguay in the opening match on June 4, followed by a match against Poland on the same day. They will then square off against hosts Switzerland and South Africa, respectively on June 5. "Hockey5s will be a different ball game altogether. Our skills, speed and everything will be tested. It will be challenging for sure, but I think it will really exciting format to play," Rajani said in a Hockey India (HI) release.
The young Indian hockey team dished out some impressive and fast-paced hockey in a Super 4s match against South Korea but an outright victory eluded them as a 4-4 draw pushed them out of the Asia Cup title race, in Jakarta on Tuesday. Malaysia's 5-0 win over Japan early in the day meant that an outright win became a pre-requisite for India to qualify for the summit clash. Both India, Malaysia and Korea finished on five points each in the Super 4 stage but the Birendra Lakra-side fell behind on goal difference. Nilam Sanjeep Xess (9th minute), Dipsan Tirkey (21st), Mahesh Sheshe Gowda (22nd) and Shakthivel Mareeswaran (37th) scored for India, while Korea scored through Jang Jonghyun (13th), Ji Woo Cheon (18th), Kim JungHoo (28th) and Jung Manjae (44th).

Thomas Cup title win will linger but Chirag Shetty, one of the architects of that historic triumph, knows it's time to move on and focus on the next challenge at hand -- Commonwealth Games. One half of India's best doubles pair, Chirag played a pivotal role both on and off the court to help India achieve an unprecedented win at the Thomas Cup tournament, considered to be the 'world cup' of shuttle sport. "The feeling of that week still remains but it's time to get back to training and face the next challenges, starting with the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Asian Games," the 24-year-old from Mumbai told PTI.
