Time and again, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir highlighted how 'her worship' remains a problem in Indian cricket. Whenever individual players get more importance for victories over teams, Gambhir shakes his head in disbelief, asking for the trend to be stopped. The cricketer-turned-politician had famously said that the credit for India's ODI World Cup triumph in 2011 should be given to the entire team and not an individual (MS Dhoni). The Gambhir vs Dhoni chatter on social media is back after former India pacer Praveen Kumar shared his opinion on the topic.
The recently concluded Test series between India and England was a tough test for the Bazball style of cricket made famous by the Ben Stokes-led side under coach Brendon McCullum. The visitors won the first Test in Hyderabad but were completely outplayed in the next four games as they slumped to their first series defeat in the 'Bazball' era. Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin pointed out a major flaw in Bazball as he explained in his latest YouTube videothat no form of cricket can be played in a similar pattern and the lack of adaptability ended up being the biggest problem for the England side.
Former India pacer Praveen Kumar lashed out at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), demanding equality in rules for all the players. While announcing the central contracts in February, the country's apex cricket board made it clear that the players who are fit and not on national duty need to be available for their respective domestic teams. Several speculations suggested that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were axed from the player retention list of BCCI as they were unavailable for their respective domestic teams despite being away from India matches.
Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant sweated it out in the nets ahead of his much-anticipated return to competitive cricket with Delhi Capitals (DC) during the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. Pant missed the IPL 2023 after suffering multiple injuries in a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. He even missed the ICC Cricket World Cup last year at home. Delhi Capitals took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a video of Pant batting in the nets. In the video, Pant was seen smashing his trademark big hits, slog sweeps, reverse sweeps etc.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz fought off swarming bees and Alexander Zverev on Thursday to set up a semi-final clash with Jannik Sinner at Indian Wells. World number two Alcaraz was stung on the forehead and temporarily forced from the court as a "bee invasion" halted his quarter-final against Germany's Zverev with just two games completed. He looked none the worse for wear when play resumed after a delay of almost two hours, polishing off a 6-3, 6-1 victory and avenging a quarter-final loss to Zverev at the Australian Open.
Star Indian shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty started their All England Open 2024 campaign with a win in the opening round of the tournament. After winning the French Open 2024, the Indian duo of Satwik and Chirag clinched a 21-18, 21-14 win over the Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. The world's number one pair, Chirag and Satwik will take on Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana in the second round.
Indian cricket team wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is well known for his sharp retorts on the pitch and he provided an example of that during a recent interaction with Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist. In an episode of the Club Prairie Fire podcast, co-hosted by Vaughan and Gilchrist, Pant was asked to sledge the former England skipper and he came up with a hilarious reply. “I would say (to Vaughan) your'e focussing too much on social media,” Pant said. When asked to sledge Gilchrist, Pant simply replied - “He's in his own zone, you cannot disturb these kind of people. Nothing much I can say to him.”
