Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will host Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, March 22. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, CSK clinched their fifth IPL title after they defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets (DLS method) in a thrilling rain-curtailed IPL 2023 final. On the other hand, the Faf du Plessis-led RCB will aim to bounce back after finishing a disappointing sixth in the IPL 2023 standings with seven wins and as many losses.

While it was on the eve of the the IPL 2024 opener that Dhoni confirmed his decision, he had hinted Ruturaj about the potential change in command last year. In a chat after officially taking over the CSK captaincy, Ruturaj admitted that he knew this decision was coming.

The Chennai Super Kings start the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with another captaincy experiment, as MS Dhoni makes way for Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead the team. Two years ago, the Super Kings had made a similar change that saw Ravindra Jadeja replacing Dhoni at the helm. However, that decision had to be reversed in the middle of the IPL 2022 campaign as Jadeja failed to impress as a skipper. During the training session of Chennai Super Kings ahead of the start of IPL 2024, MS Dhoni was witnessed recreating the iconic Ravindra Jadeja celebration from the final of the 2023 edition. After hitting the winning runs in the summit clash against Guajrat Titans, Jadeja ran in joy with both his hands raised upwards, something that Dhoni was also seen doing during the practice session of CSK. The video Dhoni went viral on social media with the fans connecting it to Jadeja's celebration.

Senior Chennai Super Kings players will help new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad settle into his role as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's successor but there may be a period of trial and error during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season, head coach Stephen Fleming said.

Veteran table tennis player and reigning CWG champion Sharath Kamal will be India's flag bearer at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games while legendary boxer MC Mary Kom was on Thursday appointed the chef de mission of the country's contingent. Sharath Kamal symbolises "the unity and spirit of our contingent as they compete on the Olympic stage", the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said in a statement while making the announcement. The IOA has not yet named a female flag bearer but sources said that the sports body will not "compromise" on gender equality and will select a woman athlete later since many quotas for the Games, starting July 26, are yet to be filled.
