Jai Hindley successfully broke up a Giro d’Italia duopoly on Sunday in becoming the first rider in five years to secure the maglia rosa who wasn’t either from Ineos Grenadiers or called Richard Carapaz. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider also became the first rider outside cycling’s big three teams – Ineos, Jumbo-Visma and UAE Team Emirates – to win a Grand Tour in the previous nine editions since Carapaz’s Giro win for Movistar in 2019.

Hindley limited his losses to closest rival Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) to just seven seconds in the decisive 17.4km time trial to secure the overall victory by 1:18 over the Ecuadorian 2019 champion and ensure that there was no repeat of his 2020 nightmare when Britain’s Tao Geoghegan Hart wrested the pink jersey from his shoulders at the eleventh hour.

VERONA, Italy: Bora–Hansgrohe rider Jai Hindley became the first Australian winner of the Giro d'Italia on Sunday (May 29) after safely coming through the final stage, a 17.1-kilometre time trial around Verona, to stay ahead of Ecuadorian challenger Richard Carapaz.
