An Indian cricket team broke a 129-year-old first-class record as nine batters hit half-centuries in the domestic Ranji Trophy.
Ranji Trophy team on Thursday created a global first-class record when all nine batters, who took guard, scored half-centuries in a mammoth first innings score of 773 for eight against a hapless Jharkhand on the third day of the quarter-final, here. At stumps, Jharkhand were 139 for 5 in their first innings and it is virtually impossible to stop Bengal from entering the semi-final as the opposition now trails by 634 runs. The match will be remembered for a record that stood the test of time since 1893 when the touring Australian team, in a first-class game against combined universities (Oxford and Cambridge), had eight of their batters scoring fifty or more.
With nine of their batters scoring half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Jharkhand in Bengaluru, the Bengal cricket team set a new world record in First-Class cricket. Bengal declared on 773/7 on the third day of the knock-out stage game after all their batters, who got time in the middle, hit at least a half-century each. No. 3 batter Sudip Gharami and No. 4 Anustup Majumdar even reached the triple figures. This is the first time in the history of cricket that nine batters have scored a half-century each in a First-class innings.
