Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the last 16 of the Miami Open with a dominant 6-0 7-6 (5) win over Dusan Lajovic that underlined the top seed’s status as the man to beat in Florida. Alcaraz made short work of the Serbian with a first-set bagel, demonstrating his box of tricks with a selection of fizzing forehands, whipped winners and delicate drop shots. Ad He needed a tie-break to get over the line in the second after a surprising late rally from the Serbian, but finished the 91-minute match with 27 winners to his name.
Bianca Andreescu defeated fellow former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin 6-4 6-4 to continue her Miami Open run and set up a last-16 clash with Ekaterina Alexandrova, who beat Belinda Bencic as another big name fell. Ninth seed Bencic might have fancied her chances of claiming her third title of the year after seeing several big names go out in the early rounds, including Ons Jabeur, Caroline Garcia, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari.
Daniil Medvedev bounced back from his Indian Wells final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz with a dominant 6-1 6-2 victory over Roberto Carballes Baena to advance in the Miami Open. The 27-year-old put on a dazzling display as he emerged victorious in just over an hour to claim his place in the third round in style. Ad Medvedev converted both break points as he wrapped up a one-sided opening set in 32 minutes, hitting nine winners along the way, and although he was spared the humiliation of a bagel, Carballes Baena was outclassed throughout.
