NEW DELHI : At least three India players and members of support staff have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of their limited-overs home series against West Indies, local media reported on Wednesday.
A COVID-19 outbreak hit the Indian cricket team on Wednesday as three players -- senior opener Shikhar Dhawan, reserve opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer -- tested positive for the virus during their mandatory isolation period before the start of West Indies series. The Indian team assembled in Ahmedabad on January 31 for the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies and were going through a three-day isolation period post their break from the South Africa series. "Three players -- Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan have tested positive. However there are multiple COVID positive cases among non-coaching administrative support staff. It could be between two to four people," a veteran BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
India spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have re-iterated the impact that former skipper MS Dhoni has had in their rise in international cricket. Both Chahal and Kuldeep enjoyed much success while playing with Dhoni, whose presence behind the sticks made their job easier. Speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, Chahal recalled a T20I match in 2018 where he conceded 64 runs against South Africa. He said that the veteran wicketkeeper came to him and lifted his confident during the tough spell against the Proteas.
Hardik Pandya received plenty of criticism after Team India's early exit from the T20 World Cup last year. Many fans and experts felt that the all-rounder wasn't fully fit which prevented him from bowling in the opener against Pakistan. The 28-year-old has been suffering from a back injury for quite some time which saw him play as a batter for most part of 2021. He also played solely as a batter for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2021 but did bowl for India in two T20 World Cup matches, against Afghanistan and New Zealand. Speaking to cricket historian Boria Majumdar, Hardik revealed that he "wasn't supposed to bowl" and "was selected in the team as a batter".
