Indian Grandmasters Predict Easy World Championship Match Victory For D Gukesh

Grandmasters Pravin Thipsay and Abhijit Kunte believe Indian GM D Gukesh, whose game bears a "resemblance" to legendary Russian Anatoly Karpov, will win the upcoming FIDE World Championship contest by the 12th round against his Chinese opponent Liren Ding in Singapore later this month. Ding will face a stern challenge from the 18-year-old Gukesh, who "doesn't make any mistakes at all" and has had a terrific run in 2024. Gukesh became the youngest champion in the history of the Candidates Tournament and also helped India win the gold medal in the 45th Chess Olympiad.

Women's Asian Champions Trophy: Deepika Brace Hands India 3-2 Win vs South Korea

Striker Deepika converted a penalty stroke three minutes from the final hooter to lead India to a tense 3-2 win over South Korea in the women's Asian Champions Trophy on Tuesday. India raced to a 2-0 lead in the first half through goals from Sangita Kumari (3rd minute) and Deepika (20th, 57th) before Korea mounted a strong comeback in the third quarter and drew parity with goals from Yuri Lee (34th) and skipper Eunbi Cheon (38th). The match headed for an exciting finish with both teams pushing for that deciding goal and it was Deepika, who scored from the spot to seal India's second consecutive victory in the tournament. India had defeated Malaysia 4-0 in their tournament-opener on Monday. The hosts will next play Thailand on Thursday.

Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand was knocked out in the opening round of Kumamoto Masters Japan with a defeat in straight games to their opponents from Chinese Taipei, here on Tuesday. The world No 20 Indian pair was brushed aside 16-21, 16-21 by Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Yin-Hui, ranked 24, in just 36 minutes in their women's doubles round 32 of clash of the Super 500 tournament. This is the first time Yin-Hui and Yin-Hui have won against the Indian duo, who still lead the head-to-head contests 2-1.

India Thrash Malaysia 4-0 In Women's Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Opener

Defending champions India beat Malaysia 4-0 in their opening match of the women's Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament here on Monday. India scored through Sangita Kumari (8th, 55th minutes), Preeti Dubey (43rd) and Udita (44th). India will next play South Korea on Tuesday. In other matches of the day, Japan and Korea played out a 2-2 draw, while Olympic silver medallist China thrashed Thailand 15-0. India were slow to start the game and Malaysia's Nur Mohd was presented with the first opportunity to score after a clever run in behind the defence but Indian goalkeeper Savita was on hand to bail the team out and save them from early blushes.
