India all-rounder Axar Patel once again made a strong case for himself, bagging the Player of the Match award in the 2nd T20I of the 3-match series against Afghanistan on Sunday. Axar's ability to bowl economical spells and the talent to bat in multiple positions across the batting order make him an absolute asset to the team. Axar was also a part of the India squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 before being ruled out due to an injury. The all-rounder is in a strong position to seal a spot in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad, but he has competition from Ravindra Jadeja for a place in the playing XI. For former India cricketer Parthiv Patel, however, Axar should be higher in the pecking order than Jadeja.

Patel reached this milestone during India's second T20I against Afghanistan in Indore on Sunday. In the match, Axar continued his good form with the ball, taking 2/17 in his quota of four overs. He took the wickets of skipper Ibrahim Zadran and Gulbadin Naib, who was looking dangerous after scoring a half-century. With the series against Afghanistan in bag, India skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday said he is happy that the players are actually walking the talk as the team ticks all the boxes ahead of the T20 World Cup. India beat Afghanistan by six wickets in the second T20I to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series, which is the last before the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. "We have been clear with what we wanted to do, very clear message to everyone and when you see a performance like that, you can be really proud," Rohit said during the post-match presentation.
India all-rounder Axar Patel has suggested that he is not taking too much pressure as far as his selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup is concerned. Axar shone with the ball on Thursday as India defeated Afghanistan by six wickets in the first T20I in Mohali. He struck in back-to-back overs, getting Rahmanullah Gurbaz stumped in the eighth and then cleaned up debutant Rahmat Shah (0) in his next over. With India scheduled to play just two T20Is before the World Cup, Axar said he's not thinking about his selection as he doesn't want to put an extra bit of pressure on himself.
Former India batter Suresh Raina believes that the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter for Rohit Sharma would be Rishabh Pant. The 26-year-old southpaw is not a part of India's ongoing three-match T20I series against Afghanistan but he is gearing up for a comeback to competitive cricket. Pant, who has started training after recovering from a car accident he met with in December 2022, is expected to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. With the Afghanistan series being India's last T20I assignment before the T20 World Cup, the performance of players in IPL is definitely going to have a say in the selection of the squad for the world event.
