Why Sir Alex Ferguson was at Manchester United training ground

Sir Alex Ferguson's visit to Carrington on Tuesday morning had nothing to do with the ongoing talks regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's future at the club.

Ferguson, 80, was pictured arriving at the United training complex roughly an hour after Ronaldo had arrived along with his agent, Jorge Mendes, to discuss the player's future at the club.

Ronaldo was expected to be at Carrington with the rest of United's international participants on July 4 but remained in Portugal, citing a family issue, and missed four friendlies in Bangkok, Melbourne and Perth.

Two days prior to Ronaldo's scheduled return, it emerged he wanted to leave United due to their slow movement in the transfer market and failure to qualify for the Champions League, which has slashed his salary by 25 per cent.
