Shreyas Iyer, the talented batter from Mumbai, is in the line of fire after the BCCI fired him, and his Indian cricket teammate Ishan Kishan, from the annual contracts.

Shreyas Iyer was part of the national team till very recently in the first two Tests against England. However, he was dropped for the last three Tests after a run of poor scores.

Later, he skipped a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai as he claimed he was having a back issue. However, a report in The Indian Express, said the NCA gave a contradictory fitness report on him.

During this time, several media publications have claimed, Shreyas Iyer attended a pre-IPL camp with Kolkata Knight Riders. This seems to have irked the BCCI selectors, who recommend players' name for central contracts.

Star India batter Shreyas Iyer on Sunday joined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) training camp ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Kolkata-based franchise shared pictures of the 29-year-old joining the team. Earlier in the month, KKR named Phil Salt as Jason's replacement for the upcoming season of the IPL 2024. With star overseas players like Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Phil Salt, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Mitchell Starc available along with a strong Indian core in Nitish Rana, skipper Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Charkavarthy, KKR will be aiming to do well in IPL 2024.
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh backed the Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan duo after the players were axed from BCCI's central contracts. Both the stars failed to find a place in the player retention list announced by the country's apex cricket board at the end of February this year. Harbhajan said that the ouster is not the end of the road for the two players. However, he added that their selection in upcoming series would depend on their form and the requirement of the team.
Injury-prone India batter Shreyas Iyer suffered a back issue yet again as Mumbai went on to beat Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy final on Thursday. Iyer had to miss the final phase of the title-decider due to an aggravated back injury, that seemed to have put his participation in the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign with Kolkata Knight Riders under jeopardy. But now, a team manager from the Mumbai side for the Ranji Trophy campaign, has confirmed that Iyer will be fit for the start of the IPL and will be joining the franchise's pre-season camp.
The Mumbai cricket team won a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy on Thursday. With a 169-run win over Vidarbha, the Ajinkya Rahane-led lifted the trophy. The fate of the final -- Mumbai's 48th in the 90 years of the tournament's history -- at the iconic Wankhede Stadium was sealed when the hosts set a 538-run target for the visiting team. Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar (102) and the unheralded Harsh Dubey (65) kept Mumbai at bay for the entire first session on the last day after Vidarbha resumed on 248 for five, needing another 290 runs to win.
Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer may end up missing the initial matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, according to a report by Times of India. The report claimed that the batter's old back injury has flared up once again following his 95-run knock for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha. In 2023, Iyer underwent surgery due to the same injury and the recent development can rule him out of the first few matches of IPL 2024.  “It is not looking good. It is the same back injury which has got aggravated. It is unlikely he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” a source told Times Of India in the report.
It has been a tough couple of months for Shreyas Iyer. The batter was not included in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) central contracts list and his form for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy was extremely disappointing. However, Shreyas was in fine touch on Tuesday as he slammed 95 off 111 balls and his celebration has gone viral on social media. Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was in attendance during the Ranji Trophy final match against Vidarbha and it was a perfect time for Iyer to find some form. He looked extremely in control against the bowlers and scored a gritty half-century.
