Sachin Tendulkar Reveals Why He Suggested Sourav Ganguly's Name For Vice-Captaincy In 1999

For three and a half decades, Sachin Tendulkar has seen Sourav Ganguly in various avatars -- a precocious teenager, a talented India contender, a stylish batter, a leader and a busy administrator.

But for India's greatest ever batter, what has stood the test of time is their friendship which is still intact and solid, long after they have both stopped playing international cricket.

As the BCCI president turns 50 on Friday, his "opening partner" opened up with PTI, sharing many insights into their friendship and how he looked at Ganguly as a future captain when he himself was leading India.

The master blaster revealed how before the 1999 tour of Australia, which was his second-last series as captain, Tendulkar in his mind was clear, who was ready to take over in case he decided to step down from captaincy. "Before stepping down, during India's tour of Australia in which I was the captain, I had suggested Sourav to be made the vice-captain of the team," Tendulkar revealed in an interview to PTI. "I had seen him from close quarters, played cricket with him, and knew he had the right qualities to take Indian cricket forward.

BCCI has successfully bid for the mega event during the ICC Annual Conference that concluded in Birmingham on Tuesday. The ICC flagship event will return to the country after more than a decade. The last time a women's 50-over World Cup was held in India was back in 2013 when Australian emerged champions after beating the West Indies by 114 runs in the final in Mumbai.

The series is part of the T20I contests that Team India will play in the lead up to the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November. In a video, posted by the BCCI on its social media handles, it can be seen that skipper Rohit, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar reaching the team hotel and being greeted by the support staff. Ahead of the T20I series, the Indian cricket team is currently playing in an ODI series against the Windies, without most of the senior players.

Commonwealth Games, with the 2010 home edition being their best performance ever (101 medals). With 72 nations expected to participate in the Birmingham Games scheduled to start from July 28, Indian athletes, spearheaded by Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, are expected to do well in this edition too. There is however no shooting at the Games this time and that is likely to dent India's overall medal count. The BCCI is in touch with the Indian Olympic Association on the issue. "Few of the visas came in today but there are still six left for processing including three players and three from support staff," an IOA source told PTI.
