Former South Africa batter and captain AB de Villiers has backed experienced India batters playing in the ICC T20 World Cup and said bringing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back for the T20Is after over a year is a "smart move".

Star opener Rohit Sharma and batter Virat Kohli returned to India's T20I squad against Afghanistan with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday revealing a 16-player roster for a three-match T20I series starting on January 11.

The senior duo made a comeback to India's T20I setup for the first time since the end of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 and ahead of this year's T20 World Cup. "I am not surprised.

I am happy for both Rohit and Virat. You want to take your best team to the World Cup. I can understand the criticism regarding the youngsters who will miss out after playing all this while.

A five-match Test series in 2024 is as rare as they come. England's red-ball tour of India, which begins on Thursday, is therefore significant not only because it offers fans a "traditional" full-length series, but also because it will be the biggest test of their eye-catching "Bazball" approach to Test cricket.
Rohit Sharma was on Tuesday named captain of the ICC ODI Team of the Year, which featured five other Indians including star batter Virat Kohli and the pace duo of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. The team mostly included the World Cup finalists -- India (runner-up) and Australia (winner) -- besides players from semi-finalists New Zealand and South Africa, the ICC said in a statement. The top order includes openers Rohit and Shubman Gill. While the Indian captain accumulated 1,255 runs at an average of 52 last year, the latter struck a brilliant 208 against the Kiwis and also finished as the highest run-scorer (1,584) in the format.
Former India all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri will be honoured with BCCI's Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday. Shubman Gill will be presented with Cricketer of the Year award following a memorable 12 months when he became the fastest to cross the 2000-run mark in ODIs and also scored five hundreds in the format. "He (Shastri) has been chosen for the honour while Gill will be awarded the cricketer of the year," said a BCCI official. The BCCI awards will be held for the first time since 2019 and both India and England teams are expected to be in attendance ahead of the first Test beginning on Thursday.
The upcoming Test series between India and England will see two members of the 'Fab-4' of Test cricket square off against each other. India's Virat Kohli and England's Joe Root have been two of the most consistent batters in the format over the past decade. Australia's Steve Smith and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson are the other two members of the 'Fab-4' of Test cricket. After overcoming a lean patch with the bat, former India opener Aakash Chopra suggested that Kohli is back among his peers.
It was a sensational performance from Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma as he slammed a record fifth T20I century to guide his team to victory against Afghanistan in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Rohit became the first batter to score five centuries in the shortest format of the sport - adding another feather to his already illustrious career. The Indian cricket team finally needed two Super Overs to clinch the match and Rohit ended up being the top performer. Wife Ritika Sajdeh took to social media to react to his feat and she posted a picture on her Instagram along with a short caption -"Special, just special."
Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh slammed 36 runs in one over but with just five sixes during the third T20I encounter against Afghanistan in Bengaluru on Wednesday. In the last over of the Indian innings, Rohit slammed Karim Janat for a four on the first ball and a six off the second ball which was a no-ball. The next ball was a free-hit that went for another six. On the following delivery which was the third legitimate ball of the over, Rohit could only manage to take a single. Rinku Singh faced the next last three balls and the left-hander slammed three sixes off them to take the score to 212. This was the third time in T20I history after Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard's achievements that 36 runs were scored in one over - the most in T20I history.
