Police cordoned off area of Cardiff after suspicious item found

Emergency services cordoned off an area of Cardiff following the discovery of a "suspicious item" that turned out to be a gas cylinder.

A bomb squad was called to Titan Road, Splott, where the market used to be, but roads have reopened.A spokesman for the force said on Tuesday afternoon: "A cordon has been enforced and road closures are in place around the area and motorists are advised to take alternative routes."But in an update in the evening the force said: "This incident in Splott has concluded safely and the roads have now reopened.

The item has been confirmed as a gas cylinder."Resident Gareth Fox, who was evacuated from his home, said in the afternoon: "I was told I had to leave my flat because they’d found a World War Two bomb whilst digging." Follow live updates:
