Olympics 2024: India Qualify For Women's Team Quarters, Ankita Bhakat Best-Placed Archer In 11th

Debutant Ankita Bhakat left behind seasoned campaigners like Deepika Kumar to emerge as the best-placed Indian archer at 11th in the Paris Olympics' women's individual recurve qualifications as the country secured a quarterfinal spot in the team event by finishing fourth here on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Ankita was the top-ranked Indian woman with 666 points, followed by Bhajan Kaur (22nd with 559 points) and Deepika Kumari (23rd with 658 points).

In the team event, India grabbed the fourth spot by scoring 1983 points. South Korea topped the standings with 2046 points. China finished runners-up while Mexico grabbed the third spot.

The top four in the team standings directly advance to the quarterfinals, while those ending between 5th to 12th play the Round of 16 fixtures.

The Indian men's 4x400m relay team failed to live up to expectations as it finished 10th overall in the heat race to miss a final round spot in the Paris Olympics on Friday. The Indian quartet of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Muhammed Ajmal, Amoj Jacob and Rajesh Ramesh clocked a season's best of 3 minutes and 0.58 seconds but that was enough only for a seventh-place finish in heat number 2 and 10th overall out of 16 teams. The top three teams in each of the two heats and the next two fastest across the two heats advance to the final.

The Indian men's hockey team defeated Spain 2-1 to clinch the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday. It was their second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympics as they also finished third at the Tokyo Olympics. The Harmanpreet Singh-led side went down in the second quarter when Spanish captain Marc Miralles scored in the 18th minute from a penalty stroke. However, India did not lose heart as Harmanpreet scored in the 30th and 33rd minute to hand them the lead.  While Spain continued to launch attacks, PR Sreejesh stood like a wall in front of the goal and managed to guide his side to a brilliant victory.
Three bronze medals in the kitty, at least a silver assured, the Indian contingent is already confirmed of 4 medals from the Paris Olympic Games. All three medals that India have at the moment, have come from shooting, with Manu Bhaker playing a big role in two of them. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's entry into the women's 50m freestyle wrestling final has assured India of a silver medal at least, though the veteran grappler would be keen to script history by clinching the prized yellow metal in the final on Wednesday.

In wrestling, Antim Panghal will compete in the women's 53kg wrestling. But the one athlete all will be focussed on is Vinesh Phogat.
