Angelo Mathews became part of cricket history on Monday as the former Sri Lanka captain became the first batter in international cricket to be 'timed out'.

The incident happened in Delhi during Sri Lanka's match against Bangladesh. After Sadeera Samarawickrama had just lost his wicket, Mathews took his time striding out to the crease and arrived to take strike after the stipulated two-minute mark.

Time further passed as he suffered an issue with his helmet strap. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the time out and the umpires obliged.

Gambhir took to X, formerly Twitter to express his views on the entire incident. However, it was former India captain Sourav Ganguly who could have been timed out back in 2007.

After 46 days and 48 matches, huge totals, shock wins, heartbreaking losses, records and controversies, the Cricket World Cup ended on Sunday. Australia beat hosts India to earn a sixth one-day international title. Opener Travis Head starred during the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday by hitting a sparkling 137 off 120 deliveries, powering Australia to a convincing six-wicket win. Head joined Ricky Ponting and Gilchrist as the third Australian to score a century in a men's World Cup final. Let's have  a look at 10 highlights from the 2023 tournament:
Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly lauded Rohit Sharma's 'Men in Blue' ahead of the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Speaking to media persons after the second semi-final between South Africa and Australia at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president praised Team India saying they are 'looking smashing'. Ganguly also wished them luck before the final. He added that if the 'Men in Blue' continue to play in the same vein as they did in the league phase of the tournament and the semifinal, they will be hard to stop.
Virat Kohli scaled the ‘Mount 50' on Wednesday, and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly had little doubt that the batting star has many more miles to traverse in his career. Kohli made his 50th ODI hundred during the World Cup semifinal against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, going one ahead of his idol Sachin Tendulkar. "It will take a lot of beating to go past this and he's not finished yet. It's a phenomenal achievement," Ganguly said during an interaction with reporters at the Eden Gardens.
Glenn Maxwell single-handedly took Australia to the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup, slamming an unbeaten 201 during a 293-run chase against Afghanistan earlier this week. Australia were reeling at 91/7 when captain Pat Cummins joined Maxwell in the middle. With another upset on cards, Maxwell turned the game on its head, stitching an unbeaten 202-run stand with Cummins. Maxwell battled severe cramps, and as a result, did much of the talking in boundaries. He struck 21 fours and 10 sixes, with Cummins managing only 12 off 68 balls during the mammoth stand.
Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha called for a change to cricket's timed-out law, saying it should be a matter for the umpires only, as debate rumbled on about Shakib Al Hasan's role in a controversial dismissal of Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews. Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by three wickets in a World Cup group-stage game in Delhi on Monday. However, the result was overshadowed by Mathews becoming the first player in the 146-year history of major international cricket to be timed out following an appeal by Shakib, which the Tigers captain refused to withdraw.
Allan Donald will leave his post as Bangladesh's fast-bowling coach following the Cricket World Cup, officials and media said on Friday, days after his public criticism in the wake of the "timed-out" row.
