Former Indian cricket team wicket-keeper and selector Saba Karim believes that veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been arguably the top match-winner for India when it comes to Test cricket.

Ashwin took 61 wickets in just 13 matches in the 2021-23 cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) and Karim said in a recent interaction that his numbers over the years have been quite impressive and his impact has put him ahead of legendary bowlers like Anil Kumble. "Let's not have any whatabouts about it.

He is arguably the No. 1 match-winner for India," Saba Karim told JioCinema. "I hope that in this World Test Championship cycle, he gets to play in the SENA countries even when India goes in with a solitary spinner.

I think that's the biggest call that the Indian team management has to take," he added. India start the 2023-25 cycle with the Test series against West Indies and Karim said that in order to reach the final of the competition, the Indian cricket team will once again need Ashwin to be in “prime form”. "There is a constant evolvement of R Ashwin, we have seen that in the past few years.

Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the the national selectors and team management to show faith in a talent like Tilak Varma and include the left-hander in the World Cup squad as he could possibly be the answer to India's middle-order woes with multiple batters still recovering from injuries. Ashwin's comments were also backed by former chairman of selectors MSK Prasad, who wouldn't mind seeing Varma in the final 15, provided Shreyas Iyer fails to make the cut. The 20-year-old stylish Hyderabad left-hander has impressed one and all with scores of 39, 50 and 49 not out in three T20I games in the West Indies and not for once looked out of place at the international level.
It is quite common for experts and cricketers to hail the Indian cricket team as ‘favourites' ahead of any major International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament. The situation is not much different with the ICC World Cup 2023 just around the corner and considering the fact that India are the hosts this time, it comes as no surprise that most people are counting them as major title contenders. However, veteran India skipper Ravichandran Ashwin had a rather interesting point to make regarding the ‘favourites' tag. He believes that it is a tactic used by cricketers around the world to reduce the pressure on themselves and put the Indian team under the spotlight.
Just days after the conclusion of the third ODI between India and West Indies, where Hardik Pandya slammed the hosts' cricket board for their poor facilities, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has echoed the same sentiments. Ashwin, who isn't a part of the ODI or T20I series against the Windies, explained the nature of affairs in West Indies, highlighting how poor certain facilities are in the Caribbeans. The off-spinner even explained that with such poor infrastructure and conditions, it is going to be tough for West Indies to produce quality cricketers in the years to come.
England are set to face India in a five-match series next year during the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. The games will start in January and go till March 2024. While for India it will be an opportunity to grab valuable WTC points against a strong opponent, England too will be raring to showcase their 'Bazball' approach on the soil of one of the most successful Test teams in the world. Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels that the travelling side will face a stern challenge against Rohit Sharma and company in India.
Just when it looked like Australia were within touching distance of an Ashesh series win, England played fearless crickets to level the Ashes series on a dramatic final day of the fifth Test at The Oval. Australia were well-placed at 264-3, chasing a mammoth 384 to win, and even had they come away with just a draw, that would have been enough to secure a 2-1 series success. But instead they suffered a dramatic collapse after a lengthy rain delay on the fifth day at The Oval.
England have taken the cricket world by storm while playing the aggressive 'Bazball' brand of game. However, Ashwin said it will be tough to see India adopting such tactics considering the team has embraced a period of transition. "We are playing Test cricket really well. But we will go through a transition very soon, and things won't be easy during that phase," he said on his YouTube channel. Ashwin also cited the difference in sporting culture in India and England as another reason for the former not going the 'Bazball' way.
