The McLaren Formula 1 team revealed the livery of its 2023 challenger, the MCL60, but it seems the team could be in for a challenging ride even before the season begins.Throughout the presentation of the MCL60, the team's undertone was that it's ready to take the fight to Alpine and battle its rivals for the title of 'best of the rest' behind Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes-AMG.
But while this is noble, those behind the (proverbial) mic were rather careful to make bold predictions for the year.Still, it was new team principal Andrea Stella who perhaps gave the most telling insight into the team's chances, declaring that McLaren "identified multiple areas of opportunity.
We are happy. Not entirely happy with the launch car, but optimistic that we should take a good step soon."This could be the team's way of underplaying its chances, but comments made in the past by CEO Zak Brown suggest that the team is targeting a return to the front by 2024/2025, if the cards line up quicker. The MCL60 name is a celebration of McLaren's six decades in racing. A new breath After two difficult seasons, McLaren opted to cut Daniel Ricciardo from his contract with one year remaining.
In his place, the British team opted for his fellow Australian, Oscar Piastri. And after a bit of turmoil and a tug-of-war between the team and Alpine, the youngster officially joined McLaren.Alongside Lando Norris, who now becomes the senior driver, the duo is tasked with lifting the team from its slump and back up the order.
