Manchester United missed the chance to keep up with the top four after being held to a 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle on Sunday.
Fred and Marcus Rashford failed to take good late chances to win the game for United, who had dominated large parts of the proceedings.
Both sides had good shouts for penalties denied by referee Craig Pawson. United manager Erik ten Hag was tight-lipped about the referee's performance, but was positive that his squad would become more clinical and score more goals in forthcoming matches.
The first of those comes this Wednesday, when Tottenham are the visitors. Spurs currently sit third in the Premier League table, level on points with second-placed Manchester City and four points behind leaders and north London rivals Arsenal.
