Maidstone FA Cup hero Bivesh Gurung is living proof you should always listen to your mum. Gurung’s 20-yard screamer gave the Stones a 2-1 second-round victory over League 2 Barrow at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday.
The midfielder told after the game how mum Sanu has been telling him to shoot more often. Her advice paid off, and then some, as Gurung fired his hometown club into the third round for the first time since a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United in 1988.
The 22-year-old is better known for his defensive qualities, with his only previous goal for the club a header at Aldershot at the start of last season.
But he showed an eye for the spectacular as National League South Maidstone bridged a gap of 46 places to defeat the high-flying Cumbrians. “I know I’m capable of doing that,” said Gurung, who came through the youth ranks at the Gallagher before a spell at Crystal Palace. “I know I don’t show it enough and my mum, she also tells me to shoot more because she knows that I can do that, and mums are always right, so she’ll probably be taking the credit for that one. “Going to bed last night I couldn’t have imagined it to be any better than that, to get the winning goal. “I’m just really proud of the whole team performance. “Everyone put in a massive shift for the team. “Everyone dug deep and we gave them a proper game.
