James McPake is Motherwell manager 'contender' as Fir Park board discuss Steve Hammell replacements

James McPake has emerged as a contender for the Motherwell job. The sorry Steelmen axed club legend Stevie Hammell at the weekend after they were unceremoniously dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Raith Rovers, continuing a wretched run of form that has seen them slip to joint bottom of the Scottish Premiership table.

Hammell looked like a dead man walking at full-time, and slipped out of Stark’s Park without speaking to the media. He was relieved of his duties later that night and the Fir Park board are now hunting for his replacement.

McPake is one potential option, according to the Courier. The former Dundee boss has Dunfermline flying high at the top of League One, seven points clear of rivals Falkirk after a stunning weekend comeback over Airdrie, fighting back from 3-0 down away from home to win 4-3 and increase their lead at the top of the table.

McPake’s name was one of a number discussed at a board meeting on Monday morning. Stuart Kettlewell has been placed in temporary charge and the former Ross County boss will be in the dugout for this Sunday’s meeting with Hearts.
