Indian Women's Hockey Team Starts 5s World Cup Qualifier With A 7-2 Win Over Malaysia

India began their campaign in the Women's Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier with a rousing 7-2 win against Malaysia in Oman on Friday.

For India, captain Navjot Kaur (3th, 28th), Akshata Dhekale (4th), Mariana Kujur (17th), Monika Dipi Toppo (12th, 20th) and Mahima Choudhary (28th) were on target.

Malaysia struck through Wan Wan (7th) and Aziz Zafirah (11th). India made an attacking start with a fast-paced set-play, scoring in the third minute through Navjot.

India's lead was doubled a minute later, when Dhekale scored a field goal. Wan's strike gave Malaysia a goal back, and they equalised four minutes later courtesy Zafirah's flawless conversion of a Challenge Goal.

India mauled Japan 35-1 after beating Malaysia 7-5 to enter the semifinals of the men's Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifiers at Salalah, Oman on Thursday. With two wins on the day, India finished second in the Elite pool table with 12 points, and earned a direct qualification for the semifinals. They play in the second semifinal of the tournament on Saturday. In their first match of the day, India won a closely-contested match against Malaysia with Gurjot Singh (7th, 11th, 17th, 29th, 30th) scoring five goals. Maninder Singh (12th) and Mohammed Raheel (21st) were other Indian scorers.

Skipper Navjot Kaur slammed a hat-trick as India continued their impressive run at the Women's Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier and defeated Malaysia 9-5 to enter the final of the tournament on Monday and also qualify for next year's World Cup. Navjot (7th, 10th, 17th minutes) struck a hat-trick while Mariana Kujur (9th, 12th) and Jyoti (21th, 26th) scored twice each. Monika Dipi Toppo (22nd) and Mahima Choudhary (14th) were the other goal scorers for India. For Malaysia, Zati Muhamad (4th, 5th), Dian Nazeri (10th, 20th) and Aziz Zafirah (16th) found the net. The inaugural edition of the Hockey 5s World Cup will be held in Muscat from January 24 to 27 next year.
