Ese Brume hits final in Budapest, Usoro, Enekwechi mixed relay team fail

(Photo by Ben Stansall / AFP)World Athletics Championships Silver medalist Ese Brume, scaled the first hurdles yesterday as Budapest 2023 edition of the championship began.Brume restored hope for Team Nigeria by finishing 4th in Group A of the qualification with a jump of 6.72m.The Delta State born long jumper must, however, improve on her jumps to guarantee a podium finish today, Sunday, when the final comes up by 11.56am.The second Nigerian woman long jumper, Ruth Usoro, could not make it, as she finished 8th in Group B with a jump 6.60m.Earlier, yesterday, Team Nigeria’s Shot Putter, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and the 4x400m mixed relay quartet of Dubem Nwachukwu, Patience Okon George, Nathaniel Ezekiel and Imaobong Nse Uko failed to make it beyond the group stage.Enekwechi, finalist in the last two editions, started on the wrong note at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest with a no throw in the opening round.The 30 year old threw 20.41m in the second and 20.68m in the third round to exit the competition.Enekwechi finished eighth in his debut at the Championships in 2019 in Doha, Qatar and 11th in Oregon, USA last year.The 4x400m Mixed relay team finished sixth in the second semifinal heat after running a 3:14.38 personal season’s best.

They could not progress from their group yesterday.The team made it to the final last year in Oregon but cpuld not replicate that in Budapest.Follow Us

Indian athlete Parul Chaudhary finished at the eleventh position in the 3000 meters steeplechase final of the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest in Hungary on Monday.  However, Parul broke the national record by marking the clock at 9:15.31 in the World Athletics Championships and qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024. Brunei athlete Winfred Mutile Yavi clinched the gold medal with a clock mark of 8:54.29, Kenya's Beatrice Chepkoech won silver with her season-best clock of 8:58.98 and another Kenya athlete Faith Cherotich achieved her personal best mark of 9:00.69, winning bronze.
