England have won Euro 2022 and we still can’t believe football has actually come home. The Lionesses beat Germany 2-1 after extra-time in the final at Wembley in front of a record 87,192 crowd – the highest total recorded in either the men’s or women’s editions of the European Championships.
If that didn’t sum up how much England’s Euro 2022 campaign captured the nation, a record peak audience of 17.5 million tuned into BBC One to watch the match.
Those 17.5 million England supporters watching at home may well have been doing so from behind the sofa. As you’d expect, it was tense and nervy.
However, Sarina Wiegman’s side took the lead with less than half an hour remaining when Ella Toone latched onto Keira Walsh’s incredible pass.
