AHMEDABAD, India : Virat Kohli has long been on the cusp of batting greatness and at 35 years old he is making a solid case to be considered the greatest 50-overs player of all time after a run-laden World Cup campaign on home soil.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam arrived in Lahore on Monday following the failed World Cup campaign, with the word going around that he will not voluntarily step down and wait for the the Pakistan Cricket Board to take a call. Babar, who was received by his family members at the Lahore International Airport, looked downcast as he came out of the building surrounded by security personnel. The insider word is that Babar will meet PCB chief Zaka Ashraf this week and will take a call on his all-format captaincy after the meeting. Pakistan, the 1992 champions, failed to make it to the semifinals after an unimpressive run where they lost five of the nine league matches. Babar was first made the white-ball captain in late 2019 and, in 2021, he also took over as the Test skipper. He has led Pakistan in two Asia Cups, two T20 World Cups and the ongoing ODI World Cup without winning any title.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam remains one of the finest batters in the world but his Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign has been far from satisfactory. Babar's poor run of form with the bat has been one of the biggest talking points in the World Cup that saw the Pakistan team put a horror show on the field. Though it is likely that Babar would go on to lose his status as the captain of the team in the coming days, Pakistan legend Wasim Akram doesn't feel Babar should be made scapegoat of the team's World Cup failure. Misbah-ul-Haq, on the other hand, admitted that Babar was expected to be among the top-2 batters in the World Cup but that didn't happen.
Pakistan's forgettable outing at the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 ended with a loss against England on Saturday. With four wins in nine games, the Babar Azam-led side finished fifth in the 10-team competition. There was not much positive to be taken from the match for Pakistan. However, there was an awkward moment when former England captain Nasser Hussain was amused with the wicketkeeping of Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan on one occasion.
Former captain Misbah Ul Haq has claimed the Pakistan Cricket Board ignored his suggestion to have a reassessment of the national team's spin bowling attack in the World Cup upon the insistence of captain Babar Azam and head coach Mickey Arthur. Pakistan, who were facing an improbable situation to make the semifinals, failed to progress into the final four for the third consecutive World Cup on Saturday after England won the toss and opted to bat.
Defending champions England failed to qualify for the World Cup semifinals in India, having won only three of their nine league games. Their final win came against Pakistan in Kolkata on Saturday night. Ben Stokes, who had come out of ODI retirement to play in the World Cup, is also not part of the ODI and T20I squads for the West Indies series.
