Connacht blitz Brive to book last-16 spot in Challenge Cup

Alex Wootton scored a hat-trick as Connacht booked their place in the last 16 of the Challenge Cup with a nine-try demolition of Brive.The wing touched down twice in the first half as Connacht cantered into a 33-5 half-time lead, and he completed his treble on 52 minutes as the Westerners eased to a third win from three games in Europe this season.John Porch, Finlay Bealham, Cathal Forde, Conor Oliver, Conor Fitzgerald and Kieran Marmion also bagged tries for Andy Friend's side, while Jack Carty kicked eight conversions to move within six points of Eric Elwood's club-record tally of 1,152.

Kevin Fabien grabbed Brive's sole score.The win moved Connacht top of Pool A ahead of their final match away to Newcastle Falcons next Saturday and on course for a home tie in the last 16.Brive sent a weakened team to Galway as they prioritise avoiding relegation from the Top 14 and they conceded two tries inside the opening eight minutes.Porch claimed Carty's crossfield kick to open the scoring, with Ireland tighthead Bealham crossing from close range.Forde scored his third try in two games before a double from Wootton had Connacht cruising by half-time.Wootton was over again early in the second period before Oliver, Fitzgerald and Marmion completed the rout.

The Blitzboks showed a never-say-die attitude in their Pool B clash against New Zealand at the Sydney Sevens on Saturday as they ran out 17-14 winners despite two yellow cards. They will now face Ireland in a quarter-final clash which kicks off at 11:05 (SA time). Following a period when both sides had possession but made little progress, New Zealand opened the scoring after five minutes when Joe Webber stepped off his right foot to beat the Blitzboks' defence and speed away for a converted try under the uprights. A Shelton van Wyk try after the half-time hooter brought South Africa back into the contest, and Ricardo Duarttee levelled up proceedings at 7-all with a brilliant conversion from the right-hand touchline. The Blitzboks were on the back foot straight from the start of the second half when Jaiden Baron was sent to the bin for not allowing New Zealand to take a quick penalty. New Zealand made that extra man count by employing a kick-pass to find Roderick Solo, who beat Impi Visser to the ball and scored a converted try under the uprights for a 14-7 lead.
The Blitzboks are off to a winning start at the Sydney Sevens after beating African neighbours Kenya 31-5 in their tournament opener on Friday.
Following their poor showing at the Hamilton Sevens in New Zealand last weekend, Blitzboks captain Siviwe Soyizwapi says they were brutally honest in their assessment of what went wrong. 
The European Professional Rugby Clubs (EPCR) on Thursday confirmed the dates and times of the Champions and Challenge Cup round of 16 fixtures, in which all five South African franchises will participate.
