Chris Sutton blames Gareth Southgate for making Harry Maguire situation even worse by adding 'petrol to the flames'

Chris Sutton was not happy with Gareth Southgate's handling of Harry Maguire's precarious position after his Hampden own goal howler - saying the England boss 'added fuel to the fire'.

It's been a horrid season so far for Manchester United man Maguire. His previous two goals have both been in his own net, for United against Sevilla in the Europa League last season, and of course Tuesday's strike in Glasgow when he spooned the ball over Aaron Ramsdale to give Scotland a fighting chance in the derby.

That, including being stripped of the captaincy, has made it a rough few months for the Yorkshireman. Almost every football fan and pundit in the UK have had their say over Tuesday's incident, with the majority offering support to Maguire - including Southgate, who branded the treatment off the defender as 'ridiculous', despite understanding why Scotland fans heckled him every time he received the ball.

But with the discourse surrounding the incident now leading to Maguire's MUM getting involved, Sutton believes that Southgate's poor handling of the situation has only added fuel to the fire - and he's called on the England boss to name names if he is to double down on the criticism.
