The Cricket World Cup 2023 final saw the tables turn as the Indian cricket team, unbeaten in 10 matches in the tournament, suffered a defeat at the hands of Australia, a team they had already beaten once in the league stage.

India were touted as the favourites to go the distance in the tournament, end their 12-year wait of winning an ODI World Cup title.

But, it was the Australian team that emerged triumphant. Speaking of the result, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, said that the best team actually went on to win the World Cup, contrary to the statements some other experts have been making.

Many believe that the Indian team was the best side in the tournament but a solitary defeat in the final prevented them from winning the title.

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has praised 'Men in Blue' skipper Rohit Sharma and said that he has done a great job during the ODI World Cup 2023. In an interview during 'ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash', Gambhir said India dominated the World Cup and had just one bad game. "In captaincy, Rohit has done a very, very good job. It is not easy to win five IPL trophies. The way India have dominated in the last 50-over World Cup and I said that before the World Cup final as well...I said that irrespective of the result, whatever the result is after the World Cup, India played like a champion side. One bad game doesn't make Rohit Sharma or this side a bad team. Ten games and the way they have dominated the whole tournament. Just because of one bad game if you call Rohit Sharma a bad captain, this is not fair," Gambhir said.

Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian batsman, has criticized the obsession with statistics in the country and won't get results until they let it go. In an interview during the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Gambhir said that the problem lies when a player's performance is under-shown and under-valued "People who say it was an underrated knock are the people who undervalue and underappreciate. Nothing is underrated, it is under-shown and under-valued, and that is where the problem lies. The country is obsessed with stats. Till the time you let go of the obsession with stats till then you won't get results," Gambhir said.
