Bill Belichick might need to make a few changes to his coaching setup with the New England Patriots this season if things don’t pick up for them. From the outside looking in, it would seem as though things are not exactly going as smoothly as they could be for the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick, or at the very least not as smooth as they were for the majority of their 20-year dynasty in the new millennium.
Following the departure of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as he left to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, Belichick and the Patriots haven’t had anyone with much experience being able to call plays on that side of the ball, or indeed anyone with the proper title of offensive coordinator.
Assistant coaches Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, both of whom have had brief stints as head coaches in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and New York Giants respectively, have been calling the plays so far, with Belichick also having his say on matters, but with Patricia and Belichick specialising in defence and Judge on special teams, and Belichick having a defensive background as well, it doesn’t make for good reading for those outside of New England.
And that may have played a part in the fact that the Patriots, who last year made the playoffs off the back of new quarterback Mac Jones who had a very impressive rookie season, could only score seven points against the Miami Dolphins this past week.
