Andres Iniesta says he will do "everything possible" to have a lasting influence on both Emirates Club and UAE football, as he accepts his latest move will most probably represent the final stop in his playing career before stepping into management.

The Barcelona great, 39, this week became possibly the most prominent signing in UAE football history when he was confirmed at the newly promoted Adnoc Pro League side on an initial one-year contract.

There is an option to extend for another season should the move go well. One of the most decorated footballers in the game, Iniesta arrives at Ras Al Khaimah's Emirates Club following five years in Japan with Vissel Kobe.

Before that, the midfielder spent 22 trophy-laden years at Barcelona, winning 22 major titles. Meanwhile, in a 133-cap international career, Iniesta helped Spain capture the 2010 World Cup – he scored the winner in the final – and two European Championship crowns, in 2008 and 2012.

MANILA, Philippines — When Paolo Banchero got off the bus Tuesday morning at the team hotel in Manila, he was cradling a FIBA basketball, which had been his carry-on for the 10-hour flight from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Spanish football legend Andres Iniesta on Sunday added to mounting criticism of the country's suspended federation president Luis Rubiales, saying his forced kiss with Jenni Hermoso after the women's World Cup final was "damaging the image" of Spanish football. "After what has happened this week I would like to convey my sadness as a person, as a father of three daughters, as a husband and as a footballer" at what has happened around "our football and around the Spanish women's national team", Iniesta wrote on his social networks. "I believe that we cannot tolerate actions like the ones we have seen, which have tarnished such a great milestone as winning a World Cup," added the scorer of the goal against the Netherlands in the 2010 men's final, which gave Spain their first World Cup.
Andres Iniesta was philosophical after missing out on the perfect start to his new career with Emirates Club as they were denied victory with the last kick of the game.
