RKC-Ajax abandoned after 'serious incident' involving keeper Etienne Vaessen

RKC Waalwijk's home Eredivisie game against Ajax was abandoned on Saturday following a "serious medical situation" surrounding goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen.

Vaessen collided with Ajax forward Brian Brobbey as the RKC keeper attempted to collect the ball in his penalty area.

The 28-year-old received treatment on the field as stewards held sheets around him to protect him from public view.

Ajax posted on their club website that the game had been suspended due to an "apparently serious medical situation surrounding RKC goalkeeper".

They added on the X platform: "This is about more than football. Praying you’re okay, Etienne," adding a heart emoji.

The Amsterdam club said on the club website: "After consultation with the home team’s players, it was decided not to resume the match."

Vaessen’s club said: "Dear RKC members, The match has finally been stopped.

"As soon as we know more, we will get back to you. Thanks for now and have a good trip home."

Ajax were leading 3-2 when the incident happened inside the final 10 minutes.
