Zak Brown says Monaco may need to adapt to keep Grand Prix in F1

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has suggested that Monaco may need to look at commercial and track improvements in order to keep its Grand Prix on the F1 calendar.

The streets of Monte-Carlo have held racing since the 1920s and it has been a staple on the Formula 1 calendar, with it dubbed as the ‘jewel in the crown.’

Indeed, the glitz and glamour of the principality simply go hand in hand with everything that Formula 1 is, but the sport is always changing and evolving and Zak Brown believes that the Monaco Grand Prix may need to as well.

In recent days, we’ve seen Las Vegas confirmed as the next host of a Grand Prix next year, in another eye-catching looking deal for the sport, that is reportedly set to bag F1 $1bn over the next 10 years.

Indeed, with Miami also on the calendar for the first time this year, the sport is finding new places to race all the time and, that said, the cost to host a race is driving up and up.

Some of the more traditional circuits have already been priced out, of course, and there are fears that more could fall by the wayside in the future, though F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has regularly stated it is his plan to make sure the balance of the new and the old is fair on the calendar.

That said, though, Monaco pays less than any other circuit due to its prestige and, with races, unfortunately, getting increasingly processional thanks to the ever-growing size of the cars, Brown has suggested that Monte-Carlo might need to have a rethink:

“Monaco always stood for the most glamorous part of Formula 1,” he said to Reuters.

“I think Miami, Singapore, Las Vegas are starting to add some pretty glamorous markets. I think Monaco needs to come up to the same commercial terms as other Grands Prix and also maybe
