'You don't expect anything' - Frank Lampard admits he's honoured by Everton fans' amazing gesture

Frank Lampard has admitted he was honoured and surprised by the warmth of the welcome given to him by Everton fans after the Goodison Park crowd sang he name during his first game in charge.

The Blues defeated Brentford 4-1 in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday and Lampard became only the second of the six managers hired by Farhad Moshiri to enjoy the accolade with supporters.

Lampard said: “I was very honoured, proud for that to happen because you don’t expect anything.

“You can have a career and be associated with one club for the majority of that career and it can affect things.

“I was so pleased with the support that I felt over my journey into the club over the weekend last week, when it was feeling like I was going to get the job.

“I was not tentative going into the game at the weekend but you wonder what will be.

“My main thing was ‘can the fans support the players?’ which they certainly did, but the reaction they had to myself was something I was just amazed by in a really good way, I’m really thankful.

“That’s important for me obviously but I understand it will be there for as good a job I do and how well I go about this job and how successful I will be but as a starting point I want to thank the fans for that.”

After being appointed, Lampard who was a regular visitor to Goodison Park as a Premier League player, acknowledged that he’d felt the force that Everton’s fans can bring their team and as he prepares to experience what their travelling support can bring for the first time as Blues boss as they go to Newcastle United, he is pleased that he was able to harness such energy from the stands.
