You can get the morning after pill over the counter for £9.89 from today

Asda has announced that the price of Levonorgestrel (the morning after pill) will be reduced to £9.89 in stores and online via its Asda Online Doctor platform starting today.

It pushes the supermarket giant to the top spot for the lowest priced providers of the product.

Customers using Asda's Online Doctor service can be prescribed different medicines from one of Asda's doctors - it can then be sent to their address of collected in stores, Wales Online reports.

Faisal Tuddy, Chief Superintendent Pharmacist at Asda said: “We’re pleased to be able to make the Morning After Pill more accessible for women who need it, by reducing the price to £9.89 in our stores and online through our Asda Online Doctor service.

"Both of these options offer a consultation with a pharmacist or GP, to ensure we’re offering the right help and support to all of our customers.”

Dr Kat at Asda Online Doctor added: “It’s encouraging to see Asda Online Doctor take steps to make medicine and prescriptions more affordable and accessible for patients. Emergency contraception is an essential medication which at a high cost can act as a barrier, preventing women from accessing emergency contraception when needed.”

The NHS states that the average price of Levonelle (which can be taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex) will cost an average price of £25.

Meanwhile, the price of ellaOne (which can be taken within 120 hours of having unprotected sex) will likely cost around £35 - if you are under 16 you can buy ellaOne without a prescription, according to the NHS.
