Yellow weather warning issued for parts of Greater Manchester issued for this afternoon

A yellow weather warning is in place for parts of Greater Manchester this afternoon (September 9).

The Met Office has issued the warning for heavy thunderstorms, and covers several eastern areas of the city-region. It is in place from 12noon today to 7pm this evening.

The warning covers areas of Stockport, Tameside, and Oldham. It envelops much of the eastern half of England, covering areas like East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and East Anglia.

The Met Office has said that the thunderstorms could bring transport disruption. Its online notice, issued at 10:39am today, says: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some impacts to travel.

“There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus, [and] delays to train services are possible.

“Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, potentially leading to some damage to buildings or structures. [There will be] perhaps damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes, with short-term loss of power and other services possible.”

As a precaution, it is also advising residents in Stockport, Tameside, and Oldham to take some steps to avoid the worst effects of the weather.
