'Would finish 8th' - Manchester United fans react to proposed 2022-23 starting lineup

Manchester United are entering a period of uncertainty where no one knows what comes next.

The search for the club's next permanent manager is entering its final stages, but, with that, comes speculation of the futures of many of the squad ahead of the next season. A new man in the dugout with new ideas.

The MEN Sport understands that, in terms of the manager, Erik ten Hag is United's preferred target for the job, but how will his United team look? That is the question on many fans' lips and a topic for much debate online.

Proposing a possible starting lineup on Twitter, Manchester Evening News' own Dom Booth on Thursday tweeted: "A completely hypothetical United XI for next season; Henderson; Dalot, Akanji, Varane, Telles; Ndidi, Fred; Elanga, Van de Beek, Sancho; [Moussa] Dembele. Quite exciting and not very expensive, thoughts?"

United fans were kept to weigh in. Regarding the strength of the squad compared to United's rivals, the fans in the replies were very clear:

Donney van de Beek was suggested as a starter, having earned plenty of goodwill amongst fans as he warmed the bench at Old Trafford. However, the are suggestions the sentiment has changed since the Dutchman's struggles on loan at Everton.

Others questioned the quality of Alex Telles at left-back, who in recent weeks has been suspect defensively against the likes of Atletico Madrid and Manchester City while offering little going forward. And the selection of Henderson in goal ahead of David de Gea also raised eyebrows.
