World Athletics Championships: Holly Bradshaw suffers freak pole vault accident

British pole vaulter Holly Bradshaw was forced to pull out of the World Athletics Championships after suffering a freak accident.

The 30-year-old withdrew with injury after her pole snapped during her final practice jump.

Bradshaw landed awkwardly on the back of her neck, escaping from serious injury but still hurting her arm and back.

After finishing with a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Bradshaw revealed she was devastated to have her World Championships hopes ended before they had even begun.

“I was absolutely gutted, I was heartbroken, I was crying in the box, sobbing,” she said. “It was a massive, massive shock. I’ve felt really good for the three weeks coming into this.

“It’s the first time it’s ever happened in my career, so it’s a great time for it to happen. I hope it never happens again.”

Bradshaw will now aim to recover in time for the Commonwealth Games, which get underway on July 28th, and the European Championships, which begin on August 15th.
