Women's World Cup Day 15: England's hopes given significant boost as Germany tumble out

England’s World Cup hopes were given a significant boost as two-time champions Germany tumbled out at the group stage following a 1-1 draw with South Korea.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side arrived in Australia ranked second in the world but will play no part in the knockout stages for the first time in their history after finishing with four points from three games.

England were on the same side of the draw as the Germans and a rematch of the Euro 2021 final looked likely in the quarter-finals.

Instead, should the Lionesses get past Nigeria in the round of 16 on Monday, they will play either Jamaica or Colombia – who finished top of Group H despite being shocked by Morocco in their final group game.

Here’s a look at how day 15 unfolded…

South Korea 1-1 Germany

All four nations in Group H had chances of progressing going into matchday three, with Germany knowing victory would be enough to secure qualification.

But they fell behind early in Brisbane, Cho So-hyun coolly tucking home to leave the highly-fancied side with a mountain to climb.

Captain Alexandra Popp levelled with a towering header three minutes before the break, which would have been enough to send Germany through had Morocco not taken the lead against Colombia on the stroke of half time.

Needing a winner in the second half, Germany applied relentless pressure and Popp saw another effort disallowed for offside before crashing a header against the crossbar.

South Korea defended valiantly to frustrate their illustrious opponents, Sydney Lohmann coming closest during the 15 minutes of added time as she fired narrowly wide from distance.
