Woman arrested on suspicion of wasting police time as cops 'satisfied' reported sexual assault 'did not occur'

A woman has been arrested after a police investigation into a reported sexual assault led them to conclude that a crime 'did not occur'. The alleged incident had been reported as taking place in a Cheshire lay-by on Monday (April 18).

Cheshire Police initially reported that a woman had been "sexually assaulted by three men" in the village of Hassall and they were "giving the victim the support she needs following this horrendous attack". They also said they were "determined to bring the offenders to justice for their heinous actions".

A 33-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent was arrested. He has since been released without charge.

Cops now say that their enquiries have left them satisfied that no offence took place, CheshireLive reports. A 34-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of wasting police time and perverting the course of justice in connection with the incident.

Chief Inspector Claire Jesson said: "Following this report, officers conducted a detailed investigation and appealed to the public for help and information. I can now reassure the residents of Hassall, and the wider public, that we are satisfied this offence did not occur and I would like to thank them for their support.

"However, I do not want this to deter people from reporting such crimes to us for fear that they will not be believed - nothing could be further from the truth. We work really hard to encourage people who have been a victim of sexual abuse - no matter how long ago - to report it.

"You will be listened to, you will receive the help and support you need and we will do all
