Wolves sack Bruno Lage after poor Premier League start

Wolves have sacked Bruno Lage following the club’s poor start to the season.

The 46-year-old has been dismissed less than 24 hours after the 2-0 defeat at West Ham.

The loss has left Wolves 18th in the Premier League, with just one win in their opening eight matches.

Lage was significantly backed in the summer transfer window as Wolves spent in excess of £100 million on Matheus Nunes, Goncalo Guedes, Sasa Kalajdzic and Nathan Collins. Diego Costa also signed on a free transfer, while Boubacar Traore joined on loan.

Former Olympiacos manager Pedro Martins, Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui and Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou are all early contenders to replace Lage.

Wolves are hoping to secure a new appointment before their Premier League fixture against Chelsea on October 8.

Speaking after Wolves’ defeat to West Ham on Saturday evening, Lage issued an apology to the club’s supporters.

‘They need to respect the fans, because the fans have been there since the first minute to support us,’ Lage said.

‘The only thing I can say is that I’m sorry about the situation. We’ve tried to solve these little problems we have and at the moment we aren’t getting points or goals, but we are working hard for them.
