Wolves: £51m midfielder ‘now clearly in thoughts’ at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers are thinking about a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes before the transfer window closes, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Bruno Lage has overseen a quiet summer at Molineux but the West Midlands side could still strengthen significantly ahead of the September 1 deadline.

Wolves received a boost this week in their potential pursuit after The Times reported that fellow suitors Liverpool would not be chasing a deal for the 23-year-old this summer.

It is understood that Nunes has a release clause in his contract valued at £51 million, so Wolves may need to break their transfer record to complete a deal.

There were reports that the Reds were readying an immediate bid for the eight-cap Portugal talent after Thiago Alcantara was ruled out for six weeks with an injury at Anfield, but that no longer appears to be the case.

A blow may have still come the way of Wolves, however, with the player apparently rejecting a contract offer from the club in favour of waiting for an official approach from Liverpool.

Nevertheless, Wolves seem undeterred by this development and could still make a move before the window closes, according to Jones.

The transfer insider claims that Nunes is now a clear target for the club ahead of the September deadline.

He claims that if Wolves could get a deal agreed it is a move that would significantly bolster the options at Lage’s disposal.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “They’re looking a bit deeper to midfielder and Matheus Nunes seems to be one that is clearly in their thoughts now. If Wolves can actually get a deal done on that front, it would really, really strengthen them.”
