Woeful Proteas wilt again, fall to historic Afghanistan series loss

Afghanistan have comprehensively beaten the Proteas in the second ODI in Sharjah on Friday as they ran out winners by 177 runs.

Batting first, Afghanistan posted 311/4 thanks to Rahmanullah Gurbaz's fine 105 and a belligerent 86* by Azmatullah Omarzai.

Bjorn Fortuin was the pick of the Proteas' bowlers, as he only went for 39 runs in his 10 overs, but without a wicket.

South Africa got off to an excellent start in their chase, with Tony de Zorzi (31) and skipper Temba Bavuma (38) putting on 73 for the first wicket in 14 overs.

From that point, however, the Proteas folded as spinners Rashid Khan (5/19) and Nangeyalia Kharote (4/26) ran through their batting lineup.

Reeza Hendricks (17) was bowled by Kharote, before Khan picked up Tristan Stubbs (5), Kyle Verreynne (2) and Wiaan Mulder (2).

Kharote then bowled Bjorn Fortuin (0), and while debutant Nqaba Peter (5) put up some resistance, he was eventually LBW to the same bowler to leave the Proteas 127/8 in the 32nd over.

Khan then removed Aiden Markram (21) before Khrote bowled Lungi Ngidi (3) to seal the win.

Afghanistan leads the two-match series 2-0, with the third and final match set for Sunday. The Proteas will be looking to save some face in what has been a poor series for Rob Walter's charges.
