WNL round-up: Galway brush aside Sligo, DLR draw with Athlone
Sligo 2-5 Galway WFC
Galway WFC came from behind to demolish Sligo Rovers 5-2 in this afternoon's WNL clash in the Showgrounds.
In the first of a full programme of WNL action, Pamela McGrory put the hosts in front with an eighth minute header. Galway weren't long waiting for an equaliser, Jamie Ericksen getting on the end of a corner two minutes later.
In a frenetic opening, McGrory put Sligo back in front on 14 minutes, side-footing home from close range, but that was as good as it got for the Bit O'Red.
Shauna Brennan levelled the game again eight minutes before half-time, finishing after a cleverly worked set-piece.
The visitors took control after the break, Bryce Reynolds scoring from yet another corner. Chloe Singleton pushed it out to 4-2, before Jenna Slattery made absolutely sure, ramming home the fifth with 20 minutes remaining.
DLR Waves 1-1 Athlone Town
DLR Waves and Athlone Town played out a draw at the UCD Bowl on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts, who entered the game 12 points adrift of third-placed Athlone, took the lead six minutes before the break when Kate Mooney stooped low to head home a cross from Sarah McKevitt.
Athlone equalised with just under 15 minutes remaining through Maddie Gibson after a fantastic run down the left from Gillian Keenan. Despite the mounting Athlone pressure, they just couldn't secure a winner.
