Winger’s situation at Sunderland becomes clearer

Sunderland have been without Leon Dajaku since the middle of March and Alex Neil has revealed to the Sunderland Echo that it still isn’t clear when he will be back in action, as the player remains ill.

The winger has played 22 times in the league for the Black Cats so far this campaign, with four goals and three assists along the way. There would likely have been more games for the player to come but having been ruled out, he has had to make do with sitting on the sidelines.

It isn’t an injury though that is keeping the attacker out of action during this run-in – instead, Dajaku is actually in Germany undergoing some tests because of an illness.

With the 21-year-old still ill, it means that he will not feature for the League One side over the course of the Easter weekend – and with Sunderland desperate to try and clinch a play-off spot, it will be a blow to lose on the on-loan star with only a select few games left before the season comes to a close.

Right now, the Black Cats are in a good position to seal a play-off spot but with five games left to play, there is still chance that they could end up dropping out of the reckoning. They’re level on points with Wycombe (although they have a game in hand on their divisional rivals) and every point will matter now for Alex Neil’s side going forward.

It will be a blow then to see Dajaku missing – but Neil is hopeful that he could be back in action soon. Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, he said: “Leon has been ill.

“He’s not been feeling well and he’s currently in Germany getting some tests so that we can see how he feels. I believe he was initially diagnosed with tonsillitis but he wasn’t able to shake it off and it seemed to get a bit worse, so we’ve allowed him to go back
